Paper | Presentation

Presentation - April 9, 2010 - Another Language Performing Arts Company presented the second edition of InterPlay: Performing on a High Tech Wire for the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters Spring conference. This paper was awarded the 2010 "Best Paper in the Arts Category." Founded April 3, 1908, the Utah Academy of Sciences was organized to promote investigations and diffuse knowledge in all areas of science. Beginning 1923, the Academy started publishing the papers presented in its annual meetings in Proceedings. In June 1933 at the annual meeting, the Academy was enlarged to include the arts and letters, and the name was changed to the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts, and Letters. Articles of incorporation and nonprofit organization status were accepted by the Academy membership at the spring meeting in April 1959. In 1977, the name of the journal of the Academy was changed from Proceedings to Encyclia. It became a refereed journal at this time. In the mid 1980s, the scope of the Academy was expanded still further to include 1) Business, 2) Education, 3) Engineering, 4) Library Information and Instruction, and 5) Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. Beginning with the 1998 issue, the journal is now The Journal of the Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters.

Visual Scripting by Elizabeth A. Miklavcic 2007-2008
Paper

Visual Scripting , written and authored by Elizabeth Miklavcic, addresses the process of creating theatre scripts for the Interplay series, as well as, a possible template for other multi-leveled and multi-faceted performances. The purpose of visual scripting is to provide a more complete visualization of an original script. With the advent of accessible media, especially software such as Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Photoshop, QuickTime, Storyboard Artist and other programs. It is possible to create a multi-media script that can be provided to actors, both as drafts in the development process and a completed version for restaging. The methods of documenting the artistic creations of our age are in need of matching the complicated nature of these newly created original works and must begin to include additional layers as well. Visual Scripting documentation is a proposed idea specifically for the benefits of a springboard for interpretation by a new cast. Not for the purposes of rote restaging, but for use as information for what was done. The Visual Script media includes text, auditory and visual files for the new cast to use as tools to move beyond the interpretations of the original cast, finding additional levels within the work. A case study application is applied to the InterPlay series, and specifically to InterPlay: Nel Tempo di Sogno (2007) created under the direction of Elizabeth and Jimmy Miklavcic.

InterPlay: Performing on a High Tech Wire by Elizabeth A. Miklavcic and Jimmy H. Miklavcic 2007
Paper | Presentation-InterPlay Description | Presentation-InterPlay Artistic Works

Through the investigation of five InterPlay performances, this paper describes the form and discusses its process and structure. It analyzes some of the issues that have been encountered, surmounted and those that require continued examination. It discusses subjects such as distributed collaboration, communications, production elements, real and virtual venues, and the layered development of works within this innovative art form.

Production Elements Awareness of the On-Line Self
by Elizabeth A. Miklavcic and Jimmy H. Miklavcic 2006

Presentation

Since most of us are using the Access Grid for scientific and meeting applications, there are a few things I'd like to point out that can be applied to help improve the quality of the image of ourselves that we are transmitting. The points we will be covering are: Camera placement; The use of lighting to help off set the overhead fluorescents, and the gray pallor of the video stream; Background and frame simplification; and audio applications. We will then cover some applications of these principals for production and performance use. At the end of the presentation we will set some lights on a volunteer and do some mixing for a live demonstration.

Packet Creek Screen Kinetics

This paper explores the process of developing a performance work for the distributed real-time surrealistic cinematic style in the collaborative telematic video genre. The steps for the development of a performance work inside of a larger collaborative work involving multiple sites are explained. This paper explores the symbolism of movement choices in the choreographic scene structure, use of sets, props, cameras and other technical equipment, as well as, the additional layer of using the Access Grid system to send video streams of the performance work over Internet 2 for a world-wide audience. Mind Waves was created for InterPlay: Dancing on the Banks of Packet Creek held March 31 through April 2, 2006. The InterPlay series, developed by Another Language Performing Arts Company, focuses on combining different art forms in innovative ways. This paper demonstrates the complexity of creating and using the Access Grid video conferencing tools and the interesting challenges artists face when participating in this genre.

Role of the Performer within the InterPlay Process Reflections of Citizenship, InterPlay Participation, History and Case Study: Loose Minds in a Box
by Elizabeth A. Miklavcic 2005

Paper | Presentation

Introduction - "The exciting thing about participating in the InterPlays and being a part of the Art on the Grid community is that it is truly about the research. There is a sense of searching and a sense of seeking. Working on projects is as much about the question as the answer. I don't feel as though anyone is trying to dictate what is the 'right' answer or 'correct' answer. The invigorating process of participation is the embracing of the question. The process of muddling through issues and diving into the work gives us the opportunity to problem solve and work toward creating something of the best quality we can based on where we are at a specific moment in time."

InterPlay
by Jimmy H. Miklavcic and Elizabeth A. Miklavcic 2005

Paper | Presentation

Introduction and General Information - "So what is an InterPlay? InterPlay is a distributed, live, real-time cinematic event that occurs simultaneously in several cities throughout North America. Each site creates a portion of the distributed performance and, with the aid of Access Grid technology, transmits the performance to the other sites. The host site, collects these video and audio streams then processes and mixes them in to a master digital mix and retransmits that stream back to the other participating sites. Each participating site has a local live component as well as a live, real-time, multimedia component."
